Washingtonia Robusta "Mexican Fan Palm"

Washingtonia Robusta are the most popular of the Washingtonia Genus.  They are an excellent choice because of their versatility and hardiness.  They will thrive in Desert Climates as well as Coastal and inland Climates and tolerate a wide range of soil conditions.  Once established,  they are also very drought tolerant.  They are native to the Coastal Desert Regions of Baja California and Sonora,  Mexico and are typically found near river beds and streams.  They are cold hardy down to the low 20's F,  however they can take down to the mid-low teens,  only sustaining some frost burn and will come back in the following growing season.  Regionally,  they are an excellent choice for most of California,  Southern Nevada,  the Lower Desert Regions of Arizona,  Central & Lower Texas,  Florida and the Coastal Gulf Regions.  They thrive in Dry Climates as well as Humid Climates.

Washingtonia Filifera "California Fan Palm"

Washingtonia Filifera are the True Desert Species of the Washingtonia Genus.  They are an excellent choice for Desert and Inland Climates.  They will thrive in Desert Climates as well as Inland and High Desert Climates and tolerate a wide range of soil conditions.  Once established,  they are also very drought tolerant.  They are mainly native to the Southern California Desert Region,  with some native stands in Arizona,  Nevada and Baja California Deserts.  They are very cold hardy,  withstanding temperatures down to the low teens ,  however they can take temperatures as low as single digits,  only sustaining some minor frost burn and will come back in the following growing season.  They also can handle very high temperatures up to the 130's,  with no damage.  Regionally,  they are an excellent choice for most of California (with the exception of the Coastal regions with heavy cooling marine layer influences),  Southern Nevada,  Desert Regions of Arizona,  Southern Utah,  Central,  Western & Lower Texas,  Florida and the Coastal Gulf Regions.  They thrive in Dry Climates as well as Warm Humid Climates.  In hot Desert Climates the canopy can reach as wide as 15' across and will provide excellent shade.  They are a great choice for Commercial,  Public and Residential applications.
